Public vs Private Solana RPC Endpoints

Public Solana RPC endpoints are free, community-funded nodes. Private (paid) endpoints are provided by RPC infrastructure companies with rate limits, SLAs, and additional features. Every production application should use a private endpoint.

Public endpoints

Solana Foundation operates public RPC endpoints:

  • Mainnet: https://api.mainnet-beta.solana.com
  • Devnet: https://api.devnet.solana.com
  • Testnet: https://api.testnet.solana.com

These are suitable for:

  • Local development and testing
  • Occasional manual queries
  • Explorer-like read-only lookups

They are not suitable for:

  • Production applications (no SLA, aggressive rate limiting)
  • Transaction sending (unreliable forwarding)
  • High-throughput indexing
  • Real-time monitoring

Why private RPC for production

Transaction reliability

Public endpoints have no obligation to forward your transaction reliably. Private providers invest in infrastructure to maximize transaction landing rates, including staked connections and multiple forwarding paths.

Consistency

Public endpoints serve the entire Solana community. During high-demand periods (popular mints, market volatility), they slow down or return errors. Private endpoints isolate your traffic.

Features

Private providers offer:

  • Extended historical data retention
  • WebSocket subscriptions with higher limits
  • gRPC (Yellowstone) streaming
  • Enhanced API methods (token metadata, transaction parsing)
  • Priority fee estimation

FAQ

Can I use public RPC for a demo or hackathon? Yes. Public endpoints are fine for short-lived demos and hackathon projects where reliability is not critical. Switch to a private endpoint before going to production.

Are free tiers and trials from private providers better than public RPC? Yes. Paid providers offer significantly better reliability than public endpoints. Supanode offers a 24+ hour free trial (no card required), Helius has a free tier with 10 req/s, and QuickNode offers a limited free plan. Even these entry-level options provide better rate limits and reliability than public RPC.

How quickly can I switch from public to private? Immediately. Replace the RPC URL in your connection configuration. No code changes are needed beyond the endpoint URL.
