What Is Bundle in Solana?
A bundle is a group of up to 5 Solana transactions submitted to the Jito Block Engine. Transactions in a bundle execute atomically (all-or-nothing) and in the exact order specified. Bundles are the primary mechanism for MEV extraction and guaranteed transaction ordering on Solana.
Bundle properties
- Atomic execution — if any transaction in the bundle fails, the entire bundle is dropped. No partial execution.
- Sequential ordering — transactions execute in the order they appear in the bundle.
- Top-of-block placement — accepted bundles are placed at the beginning of the block.
- Tip required — the last transaction must include a tip to a Jito tip account. Bundles without tips are not processed.
Use cases
- Arbitrage — a trader bundles a swap on one DEX followed by a reverse swap on another, ensuring both execute or neither does.
- Liquidations — a liquidator bundles the liquidation transaction with any setup transactions.
- Sandwich protection — a user bundles their swap with a check that reverts if the price moved unfavorably.
- Transaction landing — applications use single-transaction bundles with tips for reliable inclusion during congestion.
Bundle vs priority fee
Priority fees compete for position within the block but do not guarantee ordering relative to other transactions. Bundles guarantee both ordering and atomicity but require using the Jito infrastructure.
FAQ
What happens if my bundle is not included? If the Block Engine does not select your bundle (low tip or competition), it is dropped. No fees are charged for unexecuted bundles.
Can I bundle transactions from different signers? Yes. Each transaction in the bundle can have different signers. This enables multi-party atomic execution.
What is the maximum bundle size? 5 transactions. Each transaction is still subject to the standard 1232-byte size limit.
