What Is Finalized in Solana?
Finalized is the highest commitment level in Solana. A finalized block has reached maximum lockout in the Tower BFT consensus — it has been voted on by a supermajority of stake through 31+ consecutive votes, making rollback practically impossible.
What finalized means
A block is finalized when it is rooted — it has accumulated enough consecutive votes that the exponential lockout makes reversal computationally infeasible. Reverting a finalized block would require validators to forfeit their entire stake, which is not economically rational.
When to use finalized
Use finalized for operations where absolute certainty is required:
- Cross-chain bridge transfers
- Large financial settlements
- Irreversible state changes
- Compliance-sensitive operations
Most RPC methods default to finalized commitment.
Finalization time
Finalization typically takes 12–30 seconds after block production. This is slower than confirmed (~6–12 seconds) but provides the strongest guarantee.
FAQ
Is finalized the same as “irreversible”? Yes, for practical purposes. A finalized block cannot be reverted without breaking consensus, which would require a coordinated attack by more than one-third of stake.
Why do some applications use confirmed instead? Speed. The additional seconds between confirmed and finalized matter for time-sensitive applications. The rollback risk at confirmed level is negligible for most use cases.
What is the default commitment level for RPC methods?
Most RPC methods default to finalized. Check each method’s documentation for its specific default.
