What Is Firedancer in Solana?

Firedancer is an independent Solana validator client built from scratch in C by Jump Crypto (now Jump Validator). It is a complete reimplementation of the validator, separate from the original Agave (formerly Solana Labs) client written in Rust.

Why a second client matters

Client diversity is critical for network resilience. If a bug in one client causes it to halt or produce invalid blocks, the other client continues operating. This prevents a single software bug from taking down the entire network.

Key design goals

  1. Performance. Written in C with extensive use of SIMD instructions and zero-copy data structures, targeting higher throughput than the Rust client.
  2. Reliability. Independent implementation means independent failure modes. Bugs in Agave do not affect Firedancer.
  3. Security. Modular architecture with sandboxed components to limit the impact of vulnerabilities.

Frankendancer

Frankendancer is a hybrid configuration that uses Firedancer’s networking and block production components with Agave’s execution engine. It serves as a stepping stone toward full Firedancer deployment.

Impact on developers

Firedancer is compatible with Solana’s existing protocol. Programs, transactions, and RPC APIs work the same way regardless of which client the validator runs. Developers do not need to change their code.
