What Is Gossip in Solana?
Gossip is the protocol Solana validators use to share cluster metadata without a central coordinator. Each validator periodically exchanges information with random peers, propagating data across the entire network.
What gossip propagates
| Data | Description |
|---|---|
| Contact info | Validator addresses (TPU, TVU, RPC, gossip ports) |
| Vote state | Recent votes from each validator |
| Epoch slots | Which slots each validator has processed |
| Shred versions | The cluster’s current shred version (for fork identification) |
| Node health | Heartbeat signals indicating a validator is online |
How gossip works
Each validator maintains a gossip table — a local copy of known cluster state. Validators periodically select random peers and exchange updates. New information propagates exponentially: one node tells a few, those tell a few more, and the data reaches the entire cluster within seconds.
Gossip uses UDP for fast, lightweight communication. Messages are signed by the originating validator to prevent tampering.
Gossip and RPC
The getClusterNodes RPC method returns data from the node’s gossip table. This includes each validator’s identity, gossip address, TPU address, and RPC address. Applications use this data to discover leader TPU addresses for direct transaction sending.
FAQ
Is gossip the same as block propagation? No. Gossip handles metadata (addresses, votes, health). Block data is propagated through Turbine, a separate protocol optimized for large data transfer.
How quickly does gossip propagate information? Typically within a few seconds across the entire cluster, depending on network size and conditions.
