What Is Lamport in Solana?

A lamport is the smallest indivisible unit of SOL, Solana’s native token. One SOL equals 1,000,000,000 (10^9) lamports. Named after Leslie Lamport, whose research on distributed systems influenced Solana’s design.

Conversion

SOLLamports
1 SOL1,000,000,000
0.001 SOL1,000,000
0.000000001 SOL1

Usage in RPC

All RPC methods return balances and fees in lamports, not SOL. For example, getBalance returns the account balance in lamports. The base transaction fee is 5,000 lamports (0.000005 SOL) per signature.

In code

const LAMPORTS_PER_SOL = 1_000_000_000n;
const balanceLamports = 2_500_000_000n;
const balanceSOL = Number(balanceLamports) / Number(LAMPORTS_PER_SOL); // 2.5
