What Is ShredStream in Solana?
ShredStream is a low-latency data service by Jito that delivers raw shreds (the smallest units of block data) to subscribers as they are produced by leaders. It provides the fastest possible access to new transaction data.
Why ShredStream matters
In the standard data flow, transactions go through: leader → shreds → validators → RPC → your application. ShredStream bypasses the RPC layer by delivering shreds directly to subscribers, reducing latency by tens of milliseconds.
Use cases
- High-frequency trading. Every millisecond matters for arbitrage and liquidation bots.
- MEV searching. Seeing transactions earlier provides more time to identify and act on MEV opportunities.
- Ultra-low-latency monitoring. Applications that need the absolute fastest view of network activity.
ShredStream vs gRPC
| Feature | ShredStream | gRPC (Yellowstone) |
|---|---|---|
| Data format | Raw shreds (need parsing) | Structured protobuf |
| Latency | Lowest possible | Very low |
| Complexity | High (shred reassembly) | Medium |
| Typical users | MEV searchers, HFT | General streaming apps |
ShredStream requires infrastructure to reassemble and parse raw shreds. For most applications, gRPC provides a better balance of latency and usability.
