What Is Token 2022 in Solana?

Token-2022 (also called Token Extensions) is the next-generation token program on Solana. It supports all features of the original SPL Token standard plus configurable extensions that add advanced functionality at the protocol level.

Key extensions

ExtensionDescription
Transfer feeAutomatic fee on every transfer, configurable by the mint authority
Confidential transferEncrypted balances and transfer amounts using zero-knowledge proofs
Transfer hookCustom program invoked on every transfer for validation or side effects
Non-transferableSoulbound tokens that cannot be transferred after minting
MetadataName, symbol, and URI stored directly on the mint account
Permanent delegateAn authority that can transfer or burn tokens from any account
Interest-bearingDisplay interest rate for UI rendering (no auto-compounding)
Mint close authorityAllows closing mint accounts (impossible with original Token Program)

Adoption

Token-2022 adoption is growing. Stablecoins and project tokens increasingly use Token-2022 for features like transfer fees and on-chain metadata. Major DeFi protocols have added Token-2022 support, though some older programs remain incompatible.

FAQ

Should new tokens use Token-2022? If you need any extensions, yes. For tokens that only need basic mint/transfer/burn functionality, either program works.

Can wallets show Token-2022 tokens? Yes. Major Solana wallets (Phantom, Solflare, Backpack) support Token-2022 tokens.

Are Token-2022 accounts more expensive? Yes. Each extension adds data, increasing the rent-exempt minimum. A mint with multiple extensions requires more SOL than a basic SPL token mint.
