What Is Votor in Solana?

Votor is the consensus protocol proposed as part of the Alpenglow upgrade for Solana. It is designed to replace Tower BFT with a protocol that achieves faster finality — targeting sub-second finalization compared to Tower BFT’s 12–30 seconds.

How Votor differs from Tower BFT

Tower BFT uses exponential lockout over 32 consecutive votes to reach finality. Votor uses a different approach based on committee-driven voting rounds that can reach finality in fewer network round trips.

The key improvement is reducing the number of vote rounds needed for finalization, which directly reduces the time between block production and finality.

Votor and Rotor

Votor handles consensus (voting and finalization). Rotor handles block propagation (distributing blocks to validators). Together, they form the two core protocol changes in Alpenglow.

FAQ

When will Votor be deployed? Votor is part of the Alpenglow upgrade proposal. Check the Alpenglow page for current timeline and status.

Will Votor break existing applications? No. Votor changes the consensus mechanism but preserves the same transaction model. Applications interact with the network through RPC, which remains unchanged. The primary user-visible change is faster finality.

Is Votor the same as HotStuff or Tendermint? Votor is its own design, though it draws on ideas from modern BFT protocols. The specific optimizations are tailored to Solana’s architecture and throughput requirements.
