getInflationGovernor — Solana RPC Method

getInflationGovernor returns the inflation governor parameters that control Solana’s token issuance schedule. These parameters define the initial inflation rate, the terminal (long-term) rate, and how quickly inflation decreases over time.

Parameters

NameTypeRequiredDescription
commitmentstringNoprocessed, confirmed, or finalized. Default: finalized.

Request

curl -X POST https://api.mainnet-beta.solana.com \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "jsonrpc": "2.0",
    "id": 1,
    "method": "getInflationGovernor",
    "params": []
  }'

TypeScript (@solana/kit)

import { createSolanaRpc } from "@solana/kit";

const rpc = createSolanaRpc("https://api.mainnet-beta.solana.com");
const governor = await rpc.getInflationGovernor().send();

console.log(`Initial rate: ${(governor.initial * 100).toFixed(1)}%`);
console.log(`Terminal rate: ${(governor.terminal * 100).toFixed(1)}%`);
console.log(`Taper: ${(governor.taper * 100).toFixed(1)}%`);

Response

  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "result": {
    "initial": 0.08,
    "terminal": 0.015,
    "taper": 0.15,

  },
  "id": 1
}
FieldTypeDescription
initialf64The initial annual inflation rate (as a decimal). 0.08 = 8%.
terminalf64The long-term annual inflation rate. 0.015 = 1.5%.
taperf64The rate at which inflation decreases each year. 0.15 = 15% annual reduction.
foundationf64Percentage of inflation allocated to the Solana Foundation.
foundationTermf64Duration in years of the Foundation’s allocation.

Understanding Solana’s inflation schedule

Solana started with an 8% annual inflation rate. Each year, the rate decreases by 15% (the taper). This process continues until the rate reaches the terminal rate of 1.5%, at which point it stays constant. The inflation schedule is:

  • Year 0: 8.0%
  • Year 1: 6.8% (8% × 0.85)
  • Year 2: 5.78%
  • Year 5: 3.56%
  • Year 10: 1.67%
  • Terminal: 1.5%

The majority of inflation goes to staking rewards. Validators and their delegators receive inflation proportional to their stake relative to the total staked supply.

Common errors

This method rarely fails. The only common issue is connectivity to the RPC node.

Performance

getInflationGovernor returns static configuration values. These parameters change only through governance proposals, which is extremely rare. Safe to cache the result for extended periods.

FAQ

How does inflation affect SOL holders? Inflation creates new SOL tokens each epoch, distributed as staking rewards. SOL holders who do not stake see their share of the total supply diluted. Stakers receive inflation rewards that roughly offset the dilution.

When will inflation reach the terminal rate? At a 15% annual taper starting from 8%, the rate reaches 1.5% in approximately 15 years from mainnet launch (around 2035-2036).

What is the foundation allocation? A portion of inflation (the foundation percentage) was allocated to the Solana Foundation for a duration of foundationTerm years. This allocation has a limited lifespan and eventually expires.

Can these parameters change? Yes, through a governance vote on a feature gate. In practice, the inflation schedule has remained unchanged since mainnet launch. Any change would be a significant governance event.

Where do staking rewards come from? Staking rewards come from newly minted SOL (inflation) and from transaction fees. The inflation component is the primary source, distributed proportionally to stakers at each epoch boundary.
