getStakeMinimumDelegation — Solana RPC Method

getStakeMinimumDelegation returns the minimum amount of lamports that must be delegated to a validator for a stake account to be active. This is the floor for any staking delegation on the network.

This method rarely fails. Errors are limited to connectivity issues.

Performance

Returns a single number from the cluster’s configuration. Extremely lightweight. The value changes only through feature gate activations, so it is safe to cache.

FAQ

What is the current minimum stake delegation? On mainnet, the minimum delegation is 1 SOL (1,000,000,000 lamports). This value can be changed through governance feature activations.

Is this the same as the rent-exempt minimum for a stake account? No. The rent-exempt minimum (approximately 0.0023 SOL for a 200-byte stake account) is a separate requirement. A stake account needs both the rent-exempt minimum and the minimum delegation amount to be active.

What happens if I delegate less than the minimum? The delegation will not be activated. The stake account exists but does not participate in consensus or earn rewards until the delegation meets the minimum.

Can this value change? Yes, through a feature gate activation. The minimum was increased to 1 SOL via a governance proposal. Future changes would follow the same process.
