// SOL to lamports
const lamports = solAmount * 1_000_000_000;
// or use the constant
import { LAMPORTS_PER_SOL } from "@solana/web3.js";

const sol = lamports / LAMPORTS_PER_SOL;
Why lamports?
Lamports are Solana’s smallest unit, named after Leslie Lamport. All on-chain balances and fees are stored and processed in lamports (unsigned 64-bit integers). Using integers avoids floating-point precision errors that would occur with decimal SOL values.
FAQ
Why do RPC methods return lamports instead of SOL? All on-chain state uses lamports to avoid floating-point precision issues. Converting to SOL is a display concern handled by your application.
What is the maximum lamport value?
Lamports are stored as u64, so the maximum is 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 lamports (~18.4 billion SOL). The total SOL supply is well below this limit.
Are there decimals smaller than a lamport? No. A lamport is the indivisible unit on Solana. You cannot send or store fractions of a lamport.
