Solana Rent Calculator
Calculate the rent-exempt minimum deposit for a Solana account. Enter the account data size in bytes to see the required SOL.
How rent works
Every Solana account must hold enough SOL to be rent-exempt. The required amount depends on the account’s data size:
rent_exempt_minimum = (128 + data_size) × 3480 × 2 / 1_000_000_000 SOL
The formula components:
- 128 bytes: Fixed account header (owner, lamports, data length, etc.)
- data_size: Your account’s data in bytes
- 3,480 lamports/byte/epoch: The rent rate
- × 2: Two years of rent (the rent-exempt threshold)
Common account sizes
| Account type | Data size | Rent-exempt minimum |
|---|---|---|
| System account (0 bytes) | 0 | ~0.00089 SOL |
| Token account | 165 bytes | ~0.00204 SOL |
| Mint account | 82 bytes | ~0.00146 SOL |
| Stake account | 200 bytes | ~0.00228 SOL |
| Vote account | ~3,762 bytes | ~0.02685 SOL |
| Metadata account | ~679 bytes | ~0.00561 SOL |
Getting rent programmatically
const rentExempt = await connection.getMinimumBalanceForRentExemption(dataSize);
console.log(`Required: ${rentExempt / 1e9} SOL`);
FAQ
Is rent actually paid on Solana? No. Since the rent-exempt threshold was made mandatory, accounts must deposit enough SOL upfront to be permanently rent-exempt. The SOL is recoverable when the account is closed.
Can I get the rent deposit back? Yes. When you close an account, the lamports are returned to the account’s designated close authority (usually your wallet).
What happens if an account drops below rent-exempt? The runtime prevents reducing an account’s balance below the rent-exempt minimum. Transactions that would do so fail.
