What Is Frankendancer in Solana?
Frankendancer is a hybrid Solana validator client that combines Firedancer’s high-performance networking and block propagation stack with Agave’s proven execution engine. It serves as a transitional step toward the full Firedancer client.
Why Frankendancer exists
Building a complete validator client from scratch is a multi-year effort. Frankendancer allows the Solana network to benefit from Firedancer’s networking improvements immediately while the execution layer is still being developed and tested.
Architecture
| Component | Source |
|---|---|
| Networking (QUIC, Turbine) | Firedancer |
| Block propagation | Firedancer |
| Transaction processing | Agave |
| Consensus (Tower BFT) | Agave |
| Account storage | Agave |
Current status
Frankendancer is running on mainnet validators (as of 2026-10-20). It provides measurable improvements in network performance, particularly in transaction ingestion throughput and block propagation latency, compared to running Agave alone.
FAQ
Is Frankendancer production-ready? Yes. Multiple validators run Frankendancer on mainnet. It is considered stable for production use.
Will Frankendancer be replaced by full Firedancer? Yes. Frankendancer is a stepping stone. Once Firedancer’s execution engine is fully validated, operators can switch to the complete Firedancer client.
Do I need to do anything differently as a developer? No. Frankendancer is transparent to RPC users and application developers. It produces the same blocks and supports the same RPC methods as Agave.
